Well done to Ian Toal on winning the club handicap 5k time trial.
The time trial is a handicap start. The handicap is calculated from each runner’s previous 5k time trial time, meaning that the slowest runner heads off first and then each and every runner after sets off at after a handicap delay i.e. if your 5k time is 30 seconds faster than the slowest runner then you will start 30 seconds after the slowest runner and so on until the fastest runner heads off.
This proves to be a really exciting race as in theory every runner should cross the finish line at the same time provided that they run their exact same time from the previous time trial.
The 5k time trial has shown that the winner can be anyone’s guess, with 2019 yielding winners across a range of the slower and faster runners.
